Teaching materials

All types of conflicts affect children and teens in some way. Everyone is familiar with the conflicts that are discussed on TV and other media. And even in their everyday lives, all kids and teens are sometimes faced with disagreements, even violence.

As part of the Ahtisaari Days, we have prepared a large range of materials for you to use to learn about conflict resolution. The aim of these materials is to encourage students to learn about solving arguments and disagreements peacefully and fairly. The many simulations we’ve prepared make this interesting and fun.

This section provides materials that teachers can use to teach conflict-resolution skills at middle school (junior high) and high school level. The exercises cover six themes.

Negotiation skills

Communication skills and empathy

Participation and making a difference

Peace mediation

Conflict resolution roleplay

Finland and present-day conflicts

Climate and conflicts

Included into the materias is a conflict resolution roleplays that give students a chance to “step inside” a realistic situation. The package also includes many materials for developing the skills needed in everyday conflict resolution and problem-solving.

The overall package has been designed to fit the national curriculum for middle school (junior high) and high school students. So teachers can pick and choose from these materials for use with many different subjects, including Finnish, geography, religion, ethics, and history. The conflict resolution materials require general skills that are developed by all these subjects. These general life skills include critical thinking, empathy, participation and cooperation skills, and cultural knowledge. These skills are essential for negotiating, conflict resolution and solving arguments.

The goal of the Ahtisaari Days materials is to help students make conflict resolution and constructive problem-solving a natural part of everyday life. The materials are suitable for use with many different subjects at middle-school (junior high) and high school level.
